Investigative Reporting Workshop

A two-month investigation, done through a combination of on-the-ground reporting and analysis of publicly available data, explains how public housing residents in the District face significant delays in even basic maintenance repairs, often leading to poor conditions in buildings.

This multi-month investigation examined exactly how D.C.'s Department of Buildings is owed millions of dollars in unpaid housing violation fines dating back to 2018 — and how over $1 million of those fines at one Northwest D.C. property were waived due to administrative errors.
